Tomorrowland (2015) - Movie Review


The trailers really intrigued me and knowing that Brad Bird was directing it, how could I not be excited for it. Finally got around to watching it and if you take out the third act of the movie, it was great.

The movie is about, well, tomorrowland, or rather the journey to get there. I'll keep it vague as the movie did a great job of not telling you a lot in the trailers, unlike the stupid trend we have nowadays where even the main plot twists are sometimes shown in the trailers (I'm looking at you Terminator: Genisys).

The main cast was pretty good. Brit Robbertson, who plays the lead girl, was fantastic. I loved her in the movie. She really had this enthusiastic, perky, and plain fun aura about her and it just made her character really likable. Good thing too since she had to carry the movie on her shoulders. We also get George Clooney, who obviously needs no introduction, and was good. And the little girl, played by Raffey Cassidy, initially didn't impress me but then she grew on me and I really liked her as well. And it is very rare to see a child getting such screen-time in a movie and not ruin it.

Now the movie had this sense of journey that made me feel like a child filled with adventure, you know the feeling you used to get when watching adventure films in your younger days. This aspect was really well executed and was a lot of fun. Not to mention the plot kept it fresh and somewhat unique. Brad Bird's direction really shined here with great visuals and flow of scenes. There was this one particular seen where we see tomorrowland properly for the first time and it was this one long shot following the lead character and it really made you feel like how the character was feeling, was handled really well. The CGI was mostly great, however there were some times where it just felt off. The score complemented the adventure feel of the movie and was pretty good.

The movie is a great example of 'the journey being better than the destination' scenario. The last act of the movie was no where near as good as the rest. Not only did it felt underwhelming, it felt rushed and out of place. Now I usually don't have any problems with cliches but when most of your movie feels fresh and different, ending it with a cliche/usual type scenario just really amplifies it. Also, while the message of the movie was noble, it became way too preachy, like in your face level preachy, which kinda became annoying. And the villain felt like being a villain just for the sake of it.

With all that said and done, the sense of adventure and the fun this movie gave was still worth it and overall made this a pretty enjoyable ride.

Central Intelligence is sorta of a buddy-spy comedy and it's about an average joe hung up on life over past issues, until he meets up with one of his high school batch mate, and things suddenly turn upside down for him. A movie like this only works if the two leads meld together, and boy oh boy did they ever in this movie. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart both were excellent in this movie. I loved their chemistry, their banter and their relationship. They clearly seemed to be having a great time in their roles, and as a result, the movie as a whole became a lot more fun. Spartacus (2010) - TV Series Review (Complete)

Spartacus is a surprising series for me. I first watched it when there were only two seasons out, and back then it was kinda OK for me. Now, after re-watching the first two seasons along with the rest, I found it to be a pretty good series, great even. The series is about Spartacus and how he journey's from being a free man to a gladiator, and then to a leader. The whole series is structured in such a way that their is an overall forward progression with each season focused on a specific part. This results in focus on each area and ultimately they all come together quite nicely. Also, the series is divided into spartacus' related scenes and the roman leaders etc related scenes, developing both sides, side by side, throughout. This not only makes it easy to develop a large number of characters, it also develops both sides and not making it plain black and white. Shin Godzilla (2016) - Movie Review

Shin Godzilla is the newest Godzilla film from Toho, the studio behind the Japanese Godzilla films dating back all the way to 1954. This one is a reboot of the franchise, yet again, for the contemporary Japan and the plot is basically what you'd expect; Godzilla arrives and wreaks havoc, all the while the Government tries to defeat it. Since the original Godzilla was inspired by the effects and scars from the WWII Atomic Bombings on Japan by USA, and how destructive and horrifying that power is, this one is similar and was inspired by the 2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant disaster, all the while being disguised in a monster movie.
