The Newsroom (2012-2014) - TV Series Review (Complete)


The Newsroom is an HBO series created by Aaron Sorkin, who has written great dialogue based movies like The Social Network and Steve Jobs. It is about a news network that undergoes some changes and decides to do deliver proper news, and the ordeals they have to go through because of that.

Aaron Sorkin is an amazing writer. He just has this natural talent for making dialogue driven stuff. This series oozes with that. A show about news is obviously going to be nothing but dialogue throughout, and he made it work so SO well. I loved seeing how the news worked, how people dedicated themselves to delivering the truth, how real events from recent years were covered and how brutally honest the show could be at times. And because of Sorkin's writing, it always felt fast paced but natural at the same time, embedding the feeling and urgency of their jobs.

All that could not have been possible without the cast, which was so perfect, with Jeff Daniels taking the charge. His best performance in my opinion. Love him so much. The opening speech in the first scene of the first episode alone is reason enough to love him. Then there was Emily Mortimer, who equally stood toe to toe with Jeff. Their chemistry was so great to watch, and get developed. Rest of the cast did really great as well, but since it was a big cast, can't start talking about them all. :p

There are very few shows, which have a large character set, where I like most of them, but this is the first show where I liked everyone, every single one of them. I honestly can't think of any one, main character or secondary, that I didn't like, let alone hated. Even if I didn't like someone at first, the show developed them to be very likable later on. Their interaction/banter with each other, their relationships and all, the newsroom really felt like a family and I got to care for them to a great deal.

The story arcs varied in interest though, which is my only main issue with the series. The first season was perfect, simply perfect. But there were some stuff in season 2 and 3, that wasn't as interesting and kinda slowed the show in some episodes.

The show had heartfelt moments, bittersweet moments, cheer worthy moments and somber moments. It had a great soundtrack and with some awesome song choices fitting the scene/situation at hand. And I honestly had a really REALLY great time watching it. Wish there were a few more episodes cause I miss it. It is only 25 episodes long, the full series, and I highly recommend it.

Spartacus is a surprising series for me. I first watched it when there were only two seasons out, and back then it was kinda OK for me. Now, after re-watching the first two seasons along with the rest, I found it to be a pretty good series, great even. The series is about Spartacus and how he journey's from being a free man to a gladiator, and then to a leader. The whole series is structured in such a way that their is an overall forward progression with each season focused on a specific part. This results in focus on each area and ultimately they all come together quite nicely. Also, the series is divided into spartacus' related scenes and the roman leaders etc related scenes, developing both sides, side by side, throughout. This not only makes it easy to develop a large number of characters, it also develops both sides and not making it plain black and white. Shin Godzilla (2016) - Movie Review

Shin Godzilla is the newest Godzilla film from Toho, the studio behind the Japanese Godzilla films dating back all the way to 1954. This one is a reboot of the franchise, yet again, for the contemporary Japan and the plot is basically what you'd expect; Godzilla arrives and wreaks havoc, all the while the Government tries to defeat it. Since the original Godzilla was inspired by the effects and scars from the WWII Atomic Bombings on Japan by USA, and how destructive and horrifying that power is, this one is similar and was inspired by the 2011 Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant disaster, all the while being disguised in a monster movie. Godzilla in this movie instills a sense of dread and fear as this indestructible monster with the power to lay waste to everything, a biological TERROR, and I really liked that about this movie. The Mummy (2017) - Movie Review

You know, I see people saying they're sick and/or tired of the whole shared universe style that has been the craze for the past almost decade or so. But I, personally, still enjoy it. Thing is, there is a correct way of doing it, and then there is a shitty way of doing. I don't know why Universal thought the shitty way was the path to be on. The Mummy should have been a movie about, well, THE MUMMY. But instead, it is an amalgamation of several poorly executed plot threads in an attempt to jump-start the new 'Dark Universe', with one of them being related to The Mummy.
