The Witch (2015) - Review


The Witch has been getting great buzz and a lot of great reviews with people praising it as a different type of horror film and a great horror film after so long etc etc. And seeing the sorry state of horror movies these days, I couldn't get more excited to watch it. But Alas it was a mixed bag watch.

The movie is about a religious family in olden times, in England, that gets exiled out of a city and has to live in an isolated farm house where something lurks in the darkness.

Now, to get the good things out of the way, the acting was mostly great, especially considering the old English they had to speak and make it feel natural. Props to that. The movie looked terrific. Dark, grey and grim, perfectly complementing the setting, with beautiful cinematography. The tension winding tone is set from the start, and gets better with the creepy soundtrack that plays in just the right times. Plus, the camera usually slowly pans in, winding more tension. Also, it was just interesting to see this religious family go through this and how they responded to events etc. I liked that aspect.

For the issues with the film, well, Sure the tone was great and it looked great but the tension never reached the levels that made me scared. There were some creepy moments but they were very few and far between. Plus, those moments were just cut too short and didn't really felt like a proper release. And when the whole movie is like that, all you have is tension winding up and down and up and down, with no real release. And the movie ends. I was seriously like "That's It. WTF." It just felt like the movie didn't know how to properly create a constant tension trip and release it. It was all over the place, and that really hurt the movie. I mean it has so many good aspects that majority of horror films fail to achieve, but it just failed on the most important one.

I really wanted this movie to be good. I watched it in best way possible. Totally alone, late at night, home theater volume high, lights off, all that stuff. And still I just wasn't scared like I wanted to and as soon as the movie was over, I was over it. Nothing lingered. There was no remains of the creep factor, no shivering thoughts, nothing.

Central Intelligence (2016) - Movie Review

Central Intelligence is sorta of a buddy-spy comedy and it's about an average joe hung up on life over past issues, until he meets up with one of his high school batch mate, and things suddenly turn upside down for him. A movie like this only works if the two leads meld together, and boy oh boy did they ever in this movie. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart both were excellent in this movie. I loved their chemistry, their banter and their relationship. They clearly seemed to be having a great time in their roles, and as a result, the movie as a whole became a lot more fun. Also, I liked it more that they weren't playing their usual selves. It was just hilarious to see The Rock play this man-child agent, he always manages to bring so much energy into every role. And Kevin Hart dialed back a lot. He was the average joe, the normal guy in this movie and I liked that. You do still get the usual Kevin hart outbursts/moments, in small doses. Spartacus (2010) - TV Series Review (Complete)

Spartacus is a surprising series for me. I first watched it when there were only two seasons out, and back then it was kinda OK for me. Now, after re-watching the first two seasons along with the rest, I found it to be a pretty good series, great even. The series is about Spartacus and how he journey's from being a free man to a gladiator, and then to a leader. The whole series is structured in such a way that their is an overall forward progression with each season focused on a specific part. This results in focus on each area and ultimately they all come together quite nicely. Also, the series is divided into spartacus' related scenes and the roman leaders etc related scenes, developing both sides, side by side, throughout. This not only makes it easy to develop a large number of characters, it also develops both sides and not making it plain black and white.
