Vampire Academy (2014) - Movie Review

Well, I thought Vampire Academy might make fun of twilight movies or something, so my curiosity got the better of me and I gave it a chance. Should have left it alone.  This movie is about two girls, one a vampire pure-blood, and the other, her protector (half-blood). They attend the vampire academy, a prestigious old school, which teaches and hones their skills so that they can defend themselves from feral vamps, and also learn other stuff. I'll keep this short, throughout the entire time, it felt like I was watching a mush, a blob, floating by consisting of characters, cringe-worthy romance and love triangles, lame action, boring plot progression and subplots, and a huge sequel bait. Nothing meshed together properly, nothing hooked me, and the movie was moving so fast that (in a badly edited way) any lore or development was immediately overridden by the next scene, leaving you with nothing, hence the mush feeling.   The things that I can say I ...

Birdman (2014) - Movie Review

"A thing is a thing, not what is said of that thing." Birdman is a film about a washed up actor, who was once famous for starring as Birdman (Superhero), and his battle with himself and those around him during the final days of his broadway play premiere. This film boasts an immense ensemble of talent, and you definitely get the result. Micheal Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, Zack Galifianakis and some others all deliver amazing performances. It is truly a feat to see everyone just acting their best. And at the center of it all is Micheal Keaton and his career's best performance. He was awesome. Period. Because of awesome performances, every scene was a joy to behold, the dialogue delivery was great, the dialogue itself was great. Another thing I really enjoyed about this film was that how its story paralleled with Micheal Keaton's and Edward Norton's real life. Micheal Keaton is most known for his role in Tim Burton's classic Batman film a...

Automata (2014) - Movie Review

"Surviving is not relevant. Living is. We want to live." Automata is a movie set in dystopian post apocalyptic future. Robots or the Automata were created to help humans survive and serve them and are programmed with certain protocols. Antonio Bandares plays an Insurance agent of the company who created these machines and is investigating cases where robots seem to be violating their protocols. In some ways, this movie felt like Blade Runner+I, Robot. The city, the atmosphere, the human condition, all looks bleak and hopeless. The director certainly had a good vision. The execution of said vision left much to be desired though. The thing this movie excelled at was capturing the fear of characters in the movie from true A.I. We, the viewer really do feel a certain creepiness and eeriness when looking at pure cold expressionless Automata and the soundtrack accompanying it elevates the feeling. Went really well with the flow of the movie. Also, the Autmota were clunky and s...

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) - Movie Review

"Manners Maketh Man." This is one of those movies that completely takes you by surprise. I enjoyed it immensely. James Bond type-ish british spy film, but with way WAY more wack and awesomeness. Matthew Vaughn is a great director. I've watched all of his films (except Layer Cake) and the guy just has a knack of delivering really enjoyable/entertaining movies (Stardust, Xmen - First class, Kick ass). The cast delivered great performances all round. Colin Firth simply KICKED ASS. Loved his character and how classy yet deadly he was. Taron Egerton, the protagonist, was some nobody to me before I saw this movie. Now, he is a star in the making. Samuel L.Jackson, while didn't stole the show or anything, was a pretty good villain with a funny lisp condition. The plot actually felt somewhat fresh and wasn't your typical 'Take over the world' type scenarios that you see in this genre. Although I have see the main mechanism elsewhere, the reasons for doing, th...

It Follows (2014) - Movie Review

This is a horror film about an entity that follows you after it is given to you by sleeping with someone, kinda like ghost STD. I liked the premise. It's funny when you think about it but it is also something different. The main lead acted really well. I liked her performance and she was really cute too. The rest of the cast ranged from good to meh. The way this film was treated gave it a really different and unique feeling from the current horror films. The cinematography was amazing with tons of lingering shots, slow pans and things happening in the background. The soundtrack was spectacular and really carried the film, I absolutely loved it. The movie just felt fresh and different and I really liked this about it, don't know how else to say it. From the start till the end, the movie had a constant slow pace and this tense atmosphere. This consistency was another thing that you don't see in current horror films as usually they start very slow and build up to an big f...

The Babadook (2014) - Movie Review

This movie is about a widow with a single child, who are being haunted by an entity known as The Babadook. After hearing so much praise for this film, honestly, I'm a bit disappointed. The movie was shot well and I applaud it for not relying on cheap jump scares and instead use other means to inject fear into the viewer. Problem was that while there was some genuine creepy moments in the film, it always felt like they were cut short and didn't truly terrify me, leaving me unfulfilled. And while the movie did a good job of using the good old technique of keeping the monster in the dark and using its presence and the idea of it to scare, the movie did show the monster and I couldn't help but find it more funny looking then terrifying, which consequently reduced the fear factor of the scenes that followed. And it didn't help that there was literally no lore or info about the monster whatsoever. Now, on to the good parts. The acting in the movie was fantastic. Essie Da...

As Above, So Below (2014) - Movie Review

This movie is about a search for the philosopher's stone and the horrors they face trying to get it. The movie is shot in a found footage style manner with multiple camera perspective. These types of movies always have that introductory period where characters are introduced and are seen just going about their lives etc and almost always it's boring. This movie however did it in a different manner, using the plot to turn that period into a clue hunt of sorts, and it was interesting. As most of the movie takes place underground, it had a nice dosage of claustrophobic feeling. Some scenes amplified the effect and were pretty tense. The horror aspect was wasn't that profound though. There were maybe a scene or two that actually gave me the creeps. I did, however, loved how it dealt with hell, was just refreshing and great to something different like this on a very common thing. Perdita weeks, who acted as the main lead and the one who was after the philosopher's stone...

Space Station 76 (2014) - Movie Review

This is a movie centered around a space station in the distant future when a new co-captain arrives. The fun thing is that the future shown is through the lens of the 70's era and its sci-fi films. The whole movies is just about the random daily lives of some of the inhabitants of the space station and an impending doom that is coming towards them. Liv Tyler leads the movie as the new arrival at the station and the co-captain. She is joined by Patrick Wilson, who plays the captain. They both delivered great performances, especially Patrick Wilson and the rest of the cast wasn't too shabby either. And in a movie like this, that is what really counts. Now, this movie might come as a comedy, but it is actually more drama with a bit of comedy, and that too of the dark kind. And I thought some of the comedic stuff was handled pretty well, although it was quite subtle. Could have used a bit more fun. The special effects were low grade, but they were rarely used. The inside of th...

The Drop (2014) - Movie Review

The Drop is a movie about a bar which sometimes acts as a drop point for illegal cash flow and a robbery there triggers a series of events for the characters involved. It was a very well acted movie. Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini were really great. I especially loved how Hardy conveyed the emotions of his character through body language and facial subtlety. You could feel some of the history that the character has been through from that. Some scenes, especially the finale had great tension and execution. The pacing however was sometimes really slow though. And the story failed to setup its world like the movie wanted to. There's history, there's relationships, but the execution of it wasn't that good for my taste. That isn't to say it was horrible, it was fine to a certain degree but in a movie like this, you want to really get invested in the character's world and that just didn't happen to me. And due to that, some scenes/characters just ended up feeling...

This is where I Leave You (2014) - Review

This is a feel good type drama movie about a family that has to live in their original house for a week as a dying wish of their father and this creates all kinds of drama and commotion etc. Another movie where Jason Bateman is in a normal role and I can see that he definitely has the talent for it. He isn't a comedy only actor. Tina Fey was also pretty good in the movie. Everyone was. And I liked how everyone had some issues, highlighting just how life is, as you grow up, complications grow. The movie established the family and their history rather well. You could feel them being a disjointed family with typical issues and stuff. And I definitely did not see the ending coming. Nice twist. 7/10

The Guest (2014) - Review

What a surprise this movie was. A really good watch. The movie is about a guy who visits the family of his army buddy and is there to help them with anything. But things aren't as easy as they appear to be. That's what I'll say about the plot as this movie is best when you really don't know anything, that is how I experienced it and is probably why I liked it more. It had a great build up, the first half or so was well directed, slowly building up the characters and plot, and then the movie releases its intentions upon you. Now I can see many people not liking what happens. It is polarizing, but I for one loved it. Was a great homage and was directed beautifully. The atmosphere feel was really great in the movie, I loved it. The acting was good by the cast. The main dude, Dan Stevens was great. He was obedient, he was supportive, he was charming, he was ruthless and so on. A wide array of emotions, delivered greatly. There are tons of great shots in the mov...

Whiplash (2014) - Review

"I'd rather die drunk, broke at 34 and have people at a dinner table talk about me than live to be rich and sober at 90 and nobody remembered who I was." It's a simple story about a drummer enrolled in a prestigious music school aiming to become the next big thing and his ordeal when he gets into a class of a hardcore teacher. Never in a million years would I have thought that a movie like this would make me sweat and raise my heart beat like crazy. I'm not particularly a fan of Jazz or drumming, the subject matter of the movie, and yet this movie somehow managed to do the impossible for me. WOW, just WOW. Miles Teller, the guy who I have mostly seen in small secondary roles, was amazing as the lead in this movie. What made me even more appreciative of him is the fact that he did almost all of the drumming by himself, no special effects or whatever. And then there is J.K Simmons, who plays the hardcore teacher in the movie. He just blew my mind with his actin...

Noah (2014) - Review

An epic movie of biblical proportions. Darren Aronofsky took Noah's story and added some of his own fictional/fantasy elements to deliver a great and immense visual experience. It is very apparent from the name that the story is based on Noah. But if you go in watching this movie religiously or something similar, you will surely be disappointed. The immense amount of hate this movie got was mostly from extreme religious people or atheists from what I have seen. Regardless, watching it with an open mind is the only way to go. I liked the first half more, mainly because of its more EPIC nature, whereas the second half was more tense and psychotic I should say. The movie had a stellar cast. Russel Crowe was great as Noah. Then you had other characters played by Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson, Logan lerman etc. I will say though that acting wasn't good all round, there were some inconsistencies here and there, even by the main cast but overall it was pretty go...
