This is a movie about a major level drug bust seen through the viewpoint of an FBI agent recruited to aid in it.
Emily Blunt plays as the agent, and she was terrific in the role. You could really sense that she is a tough gal and all but the situation is way more than she can handle. However, the one who stole the show was Benicio Del Toro. The dude was perfect. Other performances were pretty great too. Well acted movie all round.
I loved how this movie showed the face of supposedly right side and created moral dilemmas about the end justifying the means etc. The movie had the balls to show brutal stuff, and I commend it for that.
Now, the way this movie was shot, and how it build-up tension, was FRIGGIN AMAZING. Outstanding cinematography coupled with great direction and hauntingly beautiful soundtrack that complemented every shot, really made for some really tense and thrilling scenes where I was on the edge of my seat. Nail biting tension. Didn't matter what the pay off was or was it even enough, the journey to that point had enough thrill that I didn't care. Definitely a front-runner for the best cinematography Oscar.
Aside from the tension filled scenes, we got the breather moments and this is where the movie kinda faltered. The pacing got kinda uneven in these parts, which was more jarring considering the excellent stuff in other scenes. The character development was also weak. And there were some scenes which just felt unnecessary.
In the end, it isn't your typical drug bust type movie filled with lots of action. It is gritty, realistic, brutal and beautiful to look at. And manages to create perfect level of tension and thrill. Definitely a must watch.
