Battlefield 1 (2016) - Video Game Review

Battlefield 1 is the next title in the franchise from DICE, bringing a much-appreciated change of setting, taking place in The Great War (World War 1). Now I was quite excited to finally play it, but at the same time, had some reservations about the campaign considering DICE's history with them. Thankfully, the improvement curve that was witnessed from BF3 to BF4 continued.  Story:  I'll be honest, I LOVED the fact that this took place in WW1 as I don't think I have ever played a big-budget AAA game focusing on that era. And it felt like a breath of fresh air amongst the saturated futuristic focus we've been getting for the past several years.   The campaign is divided into five war-stories, each taking place in different parts of the war with characters of their own. This enhanced the feel of the war and reeled you in more. Also, each of the stories boasts great cinematic presentation, with well crafted cut-scenes and moments, giving it a more EPIC feel...

No Man's Sky (2016) - Game Review

No Man's Sky is a procedurally generated open world (open universe !?) adventure-exploration game developed by the indie studio Hello Games. Now, this is a very divisive game, and I have never experienced anything like it. It's like the game starts out amazingly well, and slowly deteriorates into a repetitive mess.   Things I liked:  The soundtrack. If there is one thing this game nails completely, it was the soundtrack. I simply loved it. From hauntingly beautiful to the epic triumphant pieces, it really gave the game its own feel. You get this when you enter a space station for the first time:  No Man's Sky OST: Asimov First couple of hours. They were amazing and were exactly what I was hoping for. Things like the first time you fly your ship out of the atmosphere, land on a space station, land on a different planet etc was so exhilarating. It was unlike anything I have ever experienced, and as a space fan, I was having a blast.  Next several hours....

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015) - Review

This was one of my most anticipated game of this year. The final chapter in the great MGS franchise, the missing link. Can't tell you how excited I was when I finally got to play it. It delivered on the game-play part perfectly, but sadly it lacked in the story department. First, the good thing about the game. The gameplay was just amazing. It was a masterfully executed open world game with full on proper stealth mechanics and I think it is first of its kind. We get two huge areas (Africa and Afghanistan) to explore and have fun in. The beauty of this game was that almost any mission can be completed in several play styles. Lots of freedom and the options continue to increase when you open up new items and weapons and mechanics. Biggest new mechanic was the buddy system, where you get several companions over the course of the game that help you in various ways. Maybe you'll want to go full stealth. Or go in guns blazing. Maybe you'll do a mix of both. Or just call in s...

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Edition (2011) - Review

Never owned a PSP so didn't get a chance to play this on it. But luckily we got it ported to PS3/Xbox 360 in a HD remaster and since The Phantom Pain was right around the corner, I thought it was the best time to play this. This game isn't a spinoff or a non-canonical sequel or something just because it was released on the portable system. This is what I initially thought when the game first came out( :p ). It is actually a proper sequel to Big Boss's prequel story that we got in MGS3. The story takes place a decade after MGS3 events and we see Big Boss leaving behind all the government duties/ties he had with USA and leading his own group of mercenaries aptly named MSF or Milataires Sans Frontieres(Soldiers without borders). The game starts off with us getting a mission from a new client. The game's story is told through these beautifully crafted comic book style cutscenes, which often contained QTEs, and I'm glad they went with this option because real time c...

Darksiders (2010) - Review

This is a Hack'n Slash game starring WAR, one of the legendary four horsemen of the apocalypse. A mishap causes Earth to be ravaged by war between heaven and hell and WAR is betrayed in the event resulting him to go on a quest for revenge and find the truth about the betrayal. The narrative was cliched and felt like your typical hack'n slash scenario. I still liked the whole premise though. WAR itself was a decent character to helm and he was voiced by the same actor who voiced Gaara in Naruto, so that was awesome. Along our journey, we meet several characters, some were good and well acted. The game pulls a God of War II at the beginning, stripping our hero of all of his godly powers and leaving him as a weak, broken being. We go on a long quest to regain the power, slowly, and ultimately take revenge. Seems kinda a familiar doesn't it. Well, the game HEAVILY borrows from God of War franchise, and I do mean that. You'll be reminded of that franchise throughout. Wh...

Darksiders 2 (2012) - Review

Darksiders 2 takes place parallel to the events of the previous part. This time, we get to play as another one of the four horsemen, 'Death'. He goes on a personal mission to prove his brother War's innocence and resurrect humanity. Things I liked: Death was a cool and badass character and his development was better that War's. The combat was more refined from the previous part. Fast, fluid, responsive and fun. Liked the abilities upgrade and the fact that you can remove it all and do it again for experimentation, for a small fee. I eventually stayed with the necromancer side. Summoning minions and crows just felt really good and suited my gameplay style. RPG elements in the game made for a nice addition. NPCs dialogue wheel, side quests and tons of customization for character stats. The pacing of the game was far better than the last part. The opening of the game was great. Many of the boss fights were pretty good and varied a bit. The HUGE ASS guardian bo...

Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void (2015) - Review

"My Life for Aiur." AH Starcraft 2, my favourite RTS franchise. I never knew or got into the first Starcraft but when I played wings of liberty back when it was released, I got immediately hooked to the story and the gameplay. Been waiting a long time for this last part of the trilogy, and the franchise, to come out, and finally got enough time to replay the previous two parts and finish this all in one go. Legacy of the Void is a protoss focused campaign like how Wings of Liberty was for Terrans and Heart of the Swarm was for the Zerg. And it is about time we finally get to play as them. Things I liked: The cinematic storytelling returned better than ever. The story continues from where Heart of the Swarm left off, with Amon's threat getting bigger and graver. It all had this Mass Effect feel to it and considering it is my favourite game (trilogy) of all time, I was really digging and enjoying the story. Old faces return, alliances are created, armies are forged,...

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (2015) - Review

Another year, another Call of Duty game. And unlike the trend these days where people hate on COD because, well, it's COD, I always enjoy playing them. To me, they are like equivalent to summer blockbusters movies. Fun, entertaining, adrenaline pumping experience. And Black Ops 3 is no exception. Things I liked: While the main core feel is still typical COD, the additions in this game made a big difference to gameplay. Perhaps the biggest I have experienced in a COD game yet. The additions of augmented powers paved way for some tactical options. You get three groups of power types, each with their pros and cons, and switching them up, testing them out in different scenarios made for sum fun experimentation. Also, the powers themselves were pretty fun to use. While the game is still COD style linear, the areas were often quite large and had vertical aspect to them as well. This resulted in fun battles, especially when you experiment with powers. Addition of drones and r...
